Across Cook Inlet from Ninilchick nestled in the mouth of Tuxedni Bay lies the seldom-visited Chisik and Duck islands with their diverse seabird and shorebird populations.
Chisik Island is about 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers) long. The Snug Harbor property consists of about 30 acres on the southwest side of the island, and is the only privately held land on the island. The balance of the island is set aside as a bird sanctuary managed by the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Chisik Island and it's tiny neighbor Duck Island are home to more than 60,000 seabirds including the largest colonies of murres, puffins, and kittiwakes in Cook Inlet. The west side of the inlet ranks second only to the Copper River Delta in the diversity and total number of shorebirds during the spring migration throughout south-eastern and south-central Alaska.
Lake Clark National Park and Preserve surrounds Tuxedni Bay, and is home to a wide variety of wild life including grizzly bear that can be seen feasting on salmon in the mouth of the McNeil river a short boat ride from Snug Harbor Past Tymes. Fossil Point also lies within the park a short boat ride from the property where many different fossils can be seen lying about.
The surrounding wild beautifully rugged parkland makes this an ideal location for a remote resort with abundant wildlife viewing opportunities.
The property has a complete cannery; including three bunkhouses, a house, an office, a store, a laundry facility, a wood shop, and a metal shop. Wooden walkways connect many of the buildings in this wonderful image of the past with its rich history. Most of the buildings have electricity and running water. It also has a deep-water dock capable of receiving cruise ships and a crane that can be used to unload supplies. Many photographs of the property and surrounding area can be viewed in our photo gallery.
